Feminized Seeds: The Complete Guide for Cannabis Growers

You must learn about marijuana seeds if you want to become a cannabis grower. This is because the market is full of low-quality seeds. Purchasing such produce will lead to a failed crop or a poor harvest. This guide will help you avoid making such buy and other planting mistakes.

What Are Feminized Seeds?

Feminized seeds are a type of cannabis seeds. They are made by causing the hermaphrodite trait in a female cannabis plant. You can get this done by spraying colloidal silver solution, gibberellic acid, or via Rodelization. The ‘male’ pollen from the hermaphrodite cannabis plant is used to fertilize a female flower.

Feminized cannabis strains in the right conditions can gain enough resistance and become hermaphrodites. What this means is that they can only grow into the female cannabis plant. This process saves commercial growers time and money.

When feminized, the cannabis seeds can produce plants almost genetically identical to the female plant that is self-pollinated. This is also known as ‘cloning’ by seed. This way is reliable when trying to avoid producing male plants. However, it is time-consuming and expensive getting a stable mother plant for the production of the seed.

Additionally, a good percentage of feminized seeds become hermaphrodites. If you have the intention of breeding the plant, do not use feminized seeds. However, this type of seed is ideal for beginners who want to make sure that their cannabis garden is not infiltrated by male plants.

Are Feminized Seeds Better?

There is no male parent in the genetics of the feminized plant. The plants that emerge from the feminized seed will all be of the female variety, which is seedless. This is good for new growers because it removes the possibility of the plant’s seed turning out to be male. For feminized seeds, the chance of getting a female plant is almost 100%.

The feminized seeds you plant will surely develop into a female plant without seed buds. As a result, there is no need for you to spend too much time and energy trying to cull male plants from the growth space. Similarly, you won’t have to worry that the female cannabis plant that pops will be pollinated and produce seed; this result is less-than-desirable.

If your goal in cultivating cannabis is to get flowers filled with resins, you should only plant feminized seeds. These buds become easier to use in the absence of flowers, especially when it is time to use the wacky weed. Growers used to grow only female plants before they know how to feminize seeds. This used to be a labor-intensive activity, but not anymore.

How to Grow Feminized Seeds

Growing feminized seeds is easier than regular seeds. However, it does not mean you should not be careful in the process. There are challenges to growing feminized seeds, like with male photoperiod plants. Below are things to consider when growing feminized seeds:

1. Indoors and outdoors

You must adjust your dark and light schedule when growing feminized seeds indoors. Do this when the plant has reached an appropriate height of about half the desired final height. Switch the lights to a 12/12 schedule to initiate the flowering indoors. Autumn conditions will be stimulated and the flowering of the plant begins when the dark period gets longer.

Planting your feminized cannabis seeds outdoors during the right season and in an optimal climate is essential. This is because sunlight changes as the season. As a result, your plant will require a specific schedule to thrive. Plant your seed in the spring. You should also harvest in the fall.

2. Temperature and humidity

Feminized seeds generally prefer moderate temperatures to grow healthy. Extremes in any nature can cause stunted growth. If you do not reside in an area with an optimal climate, ensure that you grow your plant where the temperature can be controlled. Use a cooling system or heater if necessary.

Additionally, the stage in the life cycle of the plant will determine the optimal humidity level for your cannabis plant. Generally, plants and seedlings in the vegetative stage thrive better in a more humid environment. To reduce the risk of mold, reduce the relative humidity.

3. Soil

Cannabis thrives better when planted in well-draining, well-aerated, and nutrient-rich soil. You can find soil in your local garden store that has been optimized for growing cannabis. However, amend natural soil with compost, vermiculite, coco, perlite, or worm castings. These amendments are to ensure the natural soil you use become suited for cannabis.

Additionally, various nutrients are required for the healthy growth of the feminized cannabis plant. A good place to start is adding the major macronutrients’ potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen. The soil will also need micronutrients like copper, magnesium, iron, calcium, and various others.

Cannabis produced commercially mostly contains micro and macronutrients. As a result, ensure that you feed them with nutrients accordingly. Too much nutrient is not good. Be sure of the right dosage before adding it to the soil.

4. Water

The nutrient and water solution you use in watering your feminized cannabis plant must have the optimal pH level. This should be around 6.0-7.0. It is to ensure that the plant can take as many nutrients as possible.

Furthermore, the pH of your tap water can be adjusted to the right levels. You can achieve this with a few drops of pH up or down products.

5. Time

The timing usually depends on the strain, whether you are growing feminized seeds outdoors or indoors. Varieties like indicas grow fast. They have a short flowering period of 6 to 7 weeks. It takes double the time for other strains like Haze to flower.

Plant feminized autoflowers or fast-flowering varieties if you want to harvest your cannabis plant in the quickest time possible.

Conclusion

Feminized seeds are bred so that there are no male chromosomes present in them. As a result, they will grow the female cannabis plant only. This seed is an ideal choice for beginners who want a quick, easy flowering and growing process. Still in dilemma? Yes, then approach BC Seeds to know more about feminized seeds.
