Dying for Alaskan Delight

My Alaskan Delight acquisition starts with a tip. I had heard of a some landrace cannabis plants growing on a remote slope from a pilot friend. He spotted them on a remote mail route and shared the news with me. I knew it would be a difficult journey to reach them, but a helicopter was very helpful. I set out early in the morning with all my gear and equipment. It was a typical winter day in the mountains, and I was on a mission to find this rare and elusive plant that survives at high altitudes.

My Alaskan Cannabis Hunt Begins

I got dropped off about a 700 meters from the site. I had to climb a lot  to reach them. As I climbed higher and higher, the snow began to fall harder, and the wind picked up. I knew I needed to be careful, but I was so focused on finding the plant that I didn’t pay attention to the warning signs. Suddenly, I heard a loud rumble and realized that the slope I was on was about to avalanche. I tried to run, but it was too late, and I was swept away by the snow. I think it was the echoing of the chopper started the avalanche.

Surviving an Avalanche: A Close Call While Searching for a Rare Cannabis Strain

I was tumbling and rolling, unable to control my movements as the avalanche carried me down the slope. I thought for sure that it was the end for me, but somehow, I managed to grab onto a tree branch and hold on for dear life. When the avalanche finally came to a stop, I was bruised, battered, and buried in snow but alive. It was hard to find which way was up. Luckily I still had a glove in my hand. I moved the snow around to make space to drop my glove. Now I knew which was was up and I starting digging. After about 20 minutes I was free and hobbled on my way towards the marijuana. Luckily, the avalanche fell to the west and the south side unscathed. The plants were still there but frozen solid. I cut them down and brought them home. Once thawed out, I found many fully ripened seeds. These seeds were so important to me.

It was a close call, and I realized that my determination to find the plant had almost cost me my life. It was a harsh lesson, but one that I’ll never forget. From that day on, I knew that I needed to be more cautious and aware of my surroundings, especially when in nature.
